Which assignments qualify for publication in the OV
website?
We publish assignments that :
- online volunteers can undertake from their own computers, anywhere in the world.
- contribute to communities and environments in the developing world.
- result in a product that can be submitted via the Internet. A “product” in our sense may not only be a document, but can also be emails exchanged in order to provide feedback or advice.
We do not publish assignments that:
- require an online volunteer to be directly involved in financial transactions or directly solicit funds. If you are looking for a volunteer to help you with fundraising, please see our section on acceptable fund-raising practices and resources to support these practices.
- ask volunteers to pay a fee or make a donation.
- require a volunteer to work on-site at your office or at a certain project site.
- ask online volunteers to engage in activities that are overtly-religious, or that perpetuate stereotypes or messages that run counter to the principles and charter of the United Nations.
When writing your assignment description we strongly
advise you to:
- submit one assignment per individual task.
It is tempting to type in all of your available online volunteering assignments into just one posting. But while it may feel easier to do this, it makes it very hard for online volunteers to find opportunities they want. It can also be confusing: a volunteer can think you want one person to do "everything" you've listed in your posting, when you are actually looking for several different people for several different assignments. Also, it is more difficult for you to manage your applications if you are not sure which task out of your list a person has applied for. Therefore – please break up your online volunteering needs into individual assignments.
- write a detailed assignment description.
The clearer you describe your assignment, the higher the probability that you will find the right person quickly. So don’t just ask for a web developer; but note why a web site is important to your organization and what you expect the volunteer to do (and therefore which skills s/he needs to have). This way potential applicants will directly know from your assignment description what they can expect and therefore have a good basis to decide on if they would like to apply for your assignment. And you screen out people who don’t match your expectations before even receiving applications. We have more information online to help you write assignments.
- consider how many online volunteers you have time to support.
Online volunteers can help you in many ways. But still you need to invest time in communication with your volunteers. Especially at the beginning of an assignment, this amount of time can be considerable, depending on the task and the volunteer. Therefore, we recommend to start with five or less positions per assignment – that you may still increase once you are comfortably supporting your five volunteers and feel you would like to involve more.
It can be a nice idea to have hundreds of people around the world engaged in your projects – but consider that you need time to manage a large group of people, just as it takes time to manage a large team on-site. Several organizations involve online volunteers as online volunteer coordinators. This system may prove very effective and efficient – but it also takes time to set it up.
