The Gracious Foundation is a not for profit organization registered in Kenya. It focuses on supporting poor children access education, supporting youth and women empowerment programmes and advocating for public accountability. More information about the foundation can be found on our website https://thegraciousfoundation.org/. As part of its youth empowerment programme, the foundation is looking to use the concept of hackerthons, where youth spend a specified amount of time to work on an idea and present it. The best ideas will be supported for further development. The foundation is looking for three volunteers to support conceptualizing and organizing the first hackerthon. The volunteers will review the initial concept note, join online brainstorming to thrash out any issues and contribute to writing up the project document, including key steps from outreach, registration of youth and criteria for the selection of best ideas. The volunteers will use online collaboration tools.

Development programmes, technical assistance and volunteer management
In its 2018-2022 strategic plan, the foundation plans to shift the focus of its youth empowerment programme towards entrepreneurship training, enterprises development and creation of safe spaces [hubs] for youth to be creative and explore their potential. The foundation wants to be an agent of change for encouraging youth to not only think of themselves as job seekers but as job creators. The aim is to help young people think of and explore opportunities around them. One of the ways we would like to do this is through organizing annual sessions where youth develop ideas in groups and present them to their peers and panels of judges. These sessions are referred to as ideathons, borrowing from hackerthons practiced within technology community. The objective is to identify up to 40 youth aged between 18-35, organised in groups of 3-5. They will go through training on how to work in groups, how to identify opportunities and how to approach their ideas from different angles. They will go through a marathon to develop their ideas into concrete solutions. They will present their ideas to a panel. The best ideas will be supported for up to one year for further development into enterprises.
