The UNV is expected to collect the data on COVID-19 cases across all 20 countries and territories covered by the IOM Regional Office for South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Vienna (RO Vienna). The source material for the report will be from the online WHO Situational Reports (sitreps) on COVID-19 which can be found on the WHO website: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situatio.... Data collection starts with the first sitrep no. 11 (1 February 2020) when cases in the region, specifically from the Russian Federation, were first reported. The UNV is expected to enter the data into an excel spreadsheet, retrospectively as of 1 February 2020 and to keep entering the data from the new sitreps on a daily base. Public information and reporting
On 31 December 2019, the WHO China Country Office was informed of cases of pneumonia unknown etiology (unknown cause) detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. The outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020 and a pandemic on 11 March 2020. Currently, Western European countries are most affected, and Italy has a higher death toll than China. But the pandemic is also rapidly spreading in other regions of the world. Therefore IOM, together with other UN agencies and actors, is involved in supporting member states in the preparedness and response to COVID-19. The IOM RO Vienna will use the data gathered to display trends in the spread of COVID-19 in the region to underpin its need for project and concerted public health efforts.
