Background and objectives
We require volunteers fluent in written Spanish and English to translate presentation slides and training material onboarding new users to a UN-backed web mapping platform called MapX ( The training material will be provided on the MapX website for users to self-train with the application. UNVs will receive a specific MapX training before starting the translation, which will be held in the first week of the position. Candidates with GIS experience are preferred. Teamwork is an important competency for this task as UNVs will be expected to work in pairs to translate, proof-read and finalize four packages of documents (translating approximately 3500-5000 words and proof-reading a similar amount). UNVs will replicate the structure (text and screenshots) of the English documents using Powerpoint and Word. Task management questions and weekly check-ins will be held on Skype.
Translation and interpretation
MapX is an open geospatial platform, co-designed by UNEP and GRID-Geneva, that aims at managing, analyzing and visualizing spatial data on natural resources. MapX has been pilot tested in more than 50 countries on various topics such as extractives, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, land use planning, chemicals, mercury use reduction, natural hazards and environmental security. It will soon be used to power the World Environment Situation Room, UNEP's open one-stop shop for environmental data. The MapX platform is currently available in English, French and Spanish. The contributions of the volunteer will be used in capacity-building for new users to access and utilize MapX and its applications. We will give the volunteer credit in the translated document and will provide managerial support as they support us in with the translation.
