PNUMA Brazil


Created in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP (Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente, PNUMA in Portugues) has among its main objectives to maintain the state of the global environment under continuous monitoring; warn people and nations on problems and threats to the environment and recommend measures to improve the quality of life of the population without compromising the resources and environmental services for future generations.

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP has a network of regional offices to support environmental governance institutions and processes, and through this network, it engages a wide range of partners from governmental, non-governmental, academic and private in about multilateral environmental agreements and programs and sustainability projects.

In 2004, UNEP has launched a strategy to strengthen its activities in Brazil, with the opening of an office in Brasilia. This process of decentralization of actions is expected to reach soon other developing countries in order to facilitate the identification of priorities and the development of initiatives that meet subregional and national specificities.
