Food safety and nutrition
Good nutrition matters throughout the lifecycle, and it is essential during the first 1,000 days, from conception to 2 years of age. Undernutrition during this period can have lasting impacts on a child’s growth, learning and future productivity, leading to significant losses in national productivity and economic growth. Such chronic undernutrition can lead to stunting, increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and associated health costs later in life. Elaborated by the WFP Regional Centre of Excellence against Hunger and Malnutrition and the African Union, this policy brief summarizes the “Cost of Hunger in Africa” initiatives (COHA) led by the African Union Commission and conducted in 21 African countries. With information from COHA and up-to-date data from other sources on food security and nutrition, the policy brief aims to sustaining and strengthening high-level commitment, resolve and advocacy to place nutrition among the most urgent priorities of the national and continental development agendas while urging for the mobilization of resources of all kind to foster ownership and sustainable nutrition interventions.
