How does it work?

Thousands of volunteers all around the world – professionals, students, retirees and expatriates – are working each day to advance development. Here is how your organization can get the support of online volunteers:

  1. You apply to register your organization with UNV’s Online Volunteering service.
  2. UNV gives you access to opportunity and volunteer management tools if your organization meets the eligibility criteria.
  3. You submit a detailed description of a volunteer opportunity.
  4. UNV screens your opportunity and - if it meets the opportunity criteria - publishes it for volunteers to apply.
  5. You select the volunteers you wish to engage.
  6. You start your online collaboration with volunteers.
  7. At the end of the assignment, you and your volunteers complete the feedback forms.
  8. You issue an electronic certificate of appreciation to your volunteers to recognize their contributions.

Ready for volunteers?

Before you register to engage volunteers, consider this:

  1. Your needs: Take some time to determine exactly how online volunteers can support your organization. Consider the tasks that need to be fulfilled, and how online volunteers’ skills can complement your organization’s efforts. A good preparation always speeds up the mobilization and management of online volunteers.
  2. Dedicated time: Managing online volunteers requires a certain time commitment. You will need to review applications, respond to candidates, provide orientation at the beginning of an assignment and guidance throughout, and offer feedback upon completion.
  3. Cultural differences: We connect people of various backgrounds from around the world, making online volunteering a truly multicultural experience. Being aware of cultural differences, diverse working styles and the challenges that arise from communicating in different languages is crucial for a successful collaboration with online volunteers.
