Background and objectives
We are building a data platform that would enable precision farming for smallholder farmers. The platform, based on Microsoft FarmBeats, would integrate different datasets (e.g., geospatial data, weather), analyse them using machine learning algorithms, and generate customised and localised advisory for smallholder farmers (e.g., when to sow and harvest, when to irrigate the farm, weather alerts, amount of fertiliser and pesticide to be applied). This information would be delivered to farmers through a mobile app or existing channels such as WhatsApp or Telegram. We are seeking Online Volunteres with programming experience who can help develop the cloud-based platform and the UI for the solution. The task will be split among the Online Volunteers based on skills and experience.

Precision agriculture is a data-driven farm management approach that caters to the needs of individual farms. It can reduce the need for agricultural inputs like water, fertilisers, and pesticides, improve productivity and yields, and reduce the environmental footprint of farming. Precision agriculture technologies (e.g., smartphones, drones, sensors, and digital platforms) are becoming increasingly accessible for even smallholder farmers. The data platform explores the various remote sensing data currently used for precision agriculture, evaluates their feasibility for adoption, and provides decision support for smallholder farmers.
Volunteers: 3 needed
11-20 hours per week / 12 weeks
Candidates should have experience in programming, demonstrated through projects and work experience (e.g., Software Engineering, Full Stack Developing, Designing). In addition, knowledge of data science and data engineering are a plus. Experience working in a team and strong communication skills are required. An ongoing or completed degree in engineering, computer science, operations research or related field is considered an asset.

Keep this in mind:

Most organizations find the volunteers they need within just a few days and close the opportunities to more applications. So if you see a project that interests you, apply right away and make sure that you show the organization that you have the right skills and motivation for the task!

Online volunteering is rewarding and empowering, but it’s also a serious commitment. When you are chosen for an assignment, the organization is counting on you to complete it.

Our online volunteer community is made up of bright, dynamic, committed individuals who enjoy bringing out the best in each other and in the organizations they serve. We expect all volunteers to maintain high standards of behaviour, and to refrain from any activity that could be detrimental to the assignment, the organization, other volunteers, or to UNV. By registering you accept that you do not make any financial claims to organizations or to UNV. See the Terms of Use for more about standards of conduct and the conditions for using this platform.
